Ohio Jobs

Well, before discussing Ohio Jobs, let’s have a look on Ohio Jobs Outlook to 2010 from the Office of Research, Assessment and Accountability, Bureau of Labor Market Information.

Ohio Economic Trends:

  • Ohio's population has been increasing for the past decade and will continue to rise, but at a slower rate than the U.S. population.
  • Ohio income will continue to rise, but will decline as a share of national income as population increases faster in other parts of the country.
  • The Ohio economy was healthy during most of the 1990s with an unemployment rate that was below the national rate for the first eight years. In both 1999 and 2000, Ohio’s unemployment rate was slightly above the national rate. Between 1991 and 2000, the number of unemployed Ohioans dropped from 350,000 to 237,000.
  • Ohio ranks seventh in the country in gross state product, the value of output produced by a state. Ohio accounts for 3.7 percent of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product.
  • The future supply of workers is projected to increase by almost 420 thousand over the 2000-2010 periods, from 5.8 million to 6.2 million. This represents an increase of 7.2 percent, up slightly from the 6.4 percent increase over the previous 10-year period. The growth rate in Ohio's labor force will surpass that of the working-age population as the baby-boom generation (born 1946-64) continues to age in the prime working-age categories.
  • The demographic composition of the labor force is expected to change as Ohio's population ages and work force participation continues to increase. Nearly two-thirds of Ohio's labor force will be in the 25-54 age groups by 2010. Three-fifths of the oldest baby boomers in the 55-64 age groups are expected to still be working. Most workers in the labor force in 2000, about four out of five, will remain in Ohio's labor force in 2010.
  • The labor force 55 years of age and older will grow faster than the younger labor force as the baby-boom generation continues to age. The labor force 35-to-44 years of age is expected to decline by nearly one hundred and ninety thousand, reflecting the decrease in births in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Among the oldest age groups, those 55 and over will increase by 316,000. About 700,000 older Ohioans will be leaving the workforce while more than one million young people will be entering the labor force for the first time.
  • Labor force participation is expected to have a moderate rise from 67.1 percent of the working-age population in 2000 to 68.0 percent by 2010. This rise will be due to the continued increase in women's participation as the men’s participation rate declines somewhat.
  • Women's share of the Ohio labor force is projected to increase from 47.6 percent to 49.0 percent over the 10-year period. The Ohio labor force will become more diverse as the share comprised of nonwhites rises from 12.4 to 13.4 percent and will in turn affect Ohio Jobs market.

Ohio Industry Employment and Ohio Jobs:

  • Over the 2000-2010 periods, the Ohio economy is projected to create more than 660 thousand new Ohio Jobs. The number of Ohio Jobs is anticipated to rise from 5.998 million in 2000 to 6.660 million by 2010.
  • Service-producing industries will account for virtually all of the Ohio Jobs growth. Only construction is expected to add a significant number of Ohio Jobs in the goods-producing sector.
  • Manufacturing in Ohio is projected to maintain its share of total output, but increased productivity in this sector will likely result in a slight decline in employment.
  • The services sector itself, led by health and business services, will account for over half of all Ohio Jobs growth. Large numbers of jobs are also projected in retail trade, especially eating and drinking places, and local government, primarily in education.
