Job
Applications
Many employers
use Job Applications as a way of standardizing the information they
obtain from all job seekers, including some things that you would
not normally put on your resume. Your goal is to complete the Job
Applications, as completely and honestly as you can -- all the time
remembering that the Job Applications are key marketing tool for you
in the job-hunting process. Remember that some employers will use
your Job Applications as a basis for deciding whether to call you
for an interview or not. Most employers have a different application
with the same information just a different format. Being prepared when filling
out Job Applications will increase your chances of getting a
job.
There are a
variety of ways to complete Job Applications. Applicants for
employment can apply online for positions at a large number of jobs
sites or apply directly at company sites. In many sectors,
employment applications can be completed in person. When companies
do not require Job Applications, send a resume and cover letter as
your employment application.
The Job
Applications can be used in two ways:
- To find out
on the basis of information contained therein as to the chances of
success of the candidate in the job for, which he is applying, and
- To provide a
starting point for the interview.
Job
Applications tips: A hiring manager may judge you, without ever
seeing you, based on how your job application looks. So be neat and
make the Job Applications look excellent! The following are some
tips to completing Job Applications:
- Write
neatly.
- Use a black
pen unless you are instructed otherwise.
- Follow
instructions. Print if asked to do so.
- Be truthful;
do not lie.
- Fill in all
lines; don't leave blanks. Either indicate "N/A" for Not
Applicable or draw a line "_______" to show you have read the
question but have not response for it.
- Memorize or
bring all your important information such as Social Security
Number, driver's license, address, and phone numbers in Job
Applications.
- For salary
desired, write "Open", "Negotiable" or "Standard for starting
position"
- Know the
names, address, and phone number of three people for references.
Do not use Mom or Dad or other relatives unless you have been
truly employed by them. Make sure you ask the people if it is okay
to use them as a reference.
- If you can
start immediately, then indicate this. However, if you cannot
start for a week or two then write down a specific date when you
can be available to begin work.
- For work or
job experiences, don't forget your babysitting and lawn cutting
odd jobs. Also consider volunteer experience. They show you were
able to handle responsibility so write it
down!
- If the Job
Applications ask for special skills and qualifications indicate
any business keyboarding classes you have completed, computer
software such as Word or Excel that you are familiar with,
Computer languages you know, CPR or First Aid certifications, and
anything else that sells your strengths and
abilities.
Most
importantly, if you are going to pick up or fill out Job
Applications, dress nicely and be smart—they may want to interview
you immediately. Create a good
impression.
