Iraq
Jobs
According to
ABCNEWS and Time news teams, in the months following the collapse of
Saddam Hussein's regime, scenes of angry, unemployed Iraqis
protesting before U.S. forces greeted
readers and viewers all over the world. But while unemployment is on
the rise, but with a new paymaster in town, some Iraqis are earning
twice as much as they did before the war. So, Iraq Jobs are getting
everyone’s attention these days.
Employment, not
surprisingly, is one of the most urgent concerns for Iraqis. And
overall, the employment picture is bleak. The collapse of the
Baathist government, the wholesale dismantling of the Iraqi Army,
and the "de-Baathification program" has put hundreds of thousands of
Iraqis out of work, swelling the already large unemployment
figures.
The
beneficiaries of what the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA)
describes as Iraq Jobs have for the most part been petty traders and
Iraqis in other low-level positions. U.S. officials however
are optimistic that private industry will soon create large numbers
of jobs in agriculture, construction and
industry
On the brighter
side, many of those Iraqis who are employed are now earning far more
than they did in prewar Iraq, thanks to their new
paymaster: the CPA. The coalition has transformed the employment and
income picture across the country. Oil workers in the north who
earned 100,000 dinars (nearly $60) a month, now pull in 360,000
(more than $210). Workers at the Najaf Water Treatment Plant have
seen a weekly pay spike from roughly $4 to
$120.
A former
physicist who now works in a Baghdad metal shop — a lesser job,
one might think — says his income has tripled. And teachers and
doctors report huge salary jumps. There are plenty of examples like
that. And undoubtedly, at present the Iraq Jobs are increasing, but
the obvious question is whether the unemployed will be without work
for long.
Recently KBP
employed 15,000. KBR - whose corporate parent, Halliburton, was
formerly headed by Vice President Dick Cheney - is the biggest
private employer in Iraq, with some 15,000 workers in the
country and neighboring Kuwait. That work force
is more than the 11,000 troops deployed by Britain, the largest U.S. coalition partner.
Besides higher pay, soldiers, reservists and retired officers are
attracted by perks like tax-free salaries, better living conditions
and regular home leaves - a major draw for soldiers as one-year
deployments become the norm.
Alongside Iraq
Jobs in cafeterias, construction, engineering and communications,
demand is high for armed security guards. Iraq is awash with
ex-soldiers from around the world working for private security
firms. Former British, American and Nepali soldiers guard U.S. engineers, visiting
VIPs and State Department workers, and escort trucks and convoys
traveling the country. They are authorized to carry pistols and
automatic weapons.
“It’s a great
opportunity . . . to make your money and run,” said Ellis Monk, a
former Army Ranger from Huntsville, Ala., who works for one of the
leading security firms, DynCorp. Contractors for U.S. companies also
operate missile defense batteries, pilot unmanned aerial vehicles
and analyze intelligence data. At the base in Tikrit, civilian
contractors in work boots and baseball caps cruise the
well-manicured streets in Ford trucks and live and work in neat
bungalows.
